Some people experience this problem every time they buy a pair of trousers: the legs are too long and the hem needs to be taken up. However, even for people who know how to sew, hems can be quite the headache, and if you have been on a shopping spree and have ended up with several pairs of jeans to take up, it becomes even more tedious and monotonous. So here is a technique for rapidly taking up a hem, without having to sacrifice its durability and the quality of the results.

What you need:

  • Sewing/hemming pins
  • Iron-on hemming tape (fabric glue strips which can easily withstand machine washing)
  • Baking paper
  • An iron
  • A pair of scissors

Method:

  1.  Put on the trousers and estimate how much material you need to take up. Turn up the hem and pin it in place.

  2.  Place the hemming tape underneath the fold.

  3.  Place some baking paper over the area to better diffuse the heat and to protect the material.

  4. Iron the area for a few seconds and turn the trousers over and do the same on the other side. The hem is taken up and the trousers are ready to be worn.
