You can spot bronchitis a mile away with it’s characteristic symptoms that are more than just annoying.  There is of course the tiredness and the fever but the worst is of course the cough and the excess of mucus that every time ends with chest pain.  If you don’t treat bronchitis properly it can quickly get worse.  Without necessarily resorting to chemical antibiotics, you can still improve your symptoms with some simple ingredients that you can find in your cupboard.  Here are five easy, natural remedies that you can make at home to relieve your symptoms.  Remember that you should always try and keep yourself well hydrated as well. 

1) Salted water

This might seem really basic but it is often the simplest remedies that surprise us the most.  Nothing is better as a decongestant for your chest than salted water.  It is also good at getting rid of mucus!

What you need :

  • 200 ml of water
  • 20 g of salt (about two tablespoons)

Steps:

1) Boil up the water .

2) Once you have taken the pan off the heat carefully add the salt.

3) Take a mouthful of the mixture are gargle for one minute.  Repeat this process five times.

2) Lemon

Lemon is rich in vitamin C and is a great antioxidant.  Thanks to these properties, lemons can help to get rid of bacteria from your respiratory system.

What you need:

  • 250 ml of water
  • Lemon juice

Steps:

1) Heat up your water.

2) Add you lemon juice and mix.

3) Wait for about 5 minutes and then drink.

3) Eucalyptus

This a classic remedy when you are ill!  Eucalyptus is antibacterial, a great decongestant and expectorant.  These properties make it a great remedy for fighting bronchitis.  You can inhale vapours it to help free up mucus that block your air ways but you can also drink an infusion to benefit from it’s fantastic properties.

What you need:

  • 1 litre water
  • 10 g fresh eucalyptus flowers

Steps:

1) Bring your water to the boil.

2) Add your leaves and leave to infuse for 15 minutes.

3) Drink some of the mixture three times per day.

4) Oregano

We love oregano on pizzas and in our dishes but as well as having a great taste, this herb contains lots of antioxidants and phenolic acids.  It is commonly known as a plant that improves your digestion but it also has tonic, expectorant, antibiotic and perspiring properties.  It helps the body to cleanse itself which can leave you feeling tired. Drinking lots is best way to deal with this standard symptom of fatigue.

What you need:

  • 500 g of honey
  • 40 g of oregano

Steps:

1) Cook the oregano in a pan on a low heat with a dash of water.

2) Add the honey to the mixture and then transfer everything into an airtight container.

3) Take one teaspoon of the mixture per day.

5) Mauve

This plant has anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties.  Mucus can be discharged more easily thanks to this plant making the layers that cover your bronchial tubes no more than a bad memory.

What you need:

  • One litre of water
  • 50 g mauve flowers

Steps:

1) Pour the flowers into the water in a pan.

2) Boil the water for 20 minutes.

3) Sugar your mixture to your own tastes.

4) Drink three cups of your concoction every day.
