5 essential oils to use for 5 different types of headaches

A bad headache can completely ruin your day. And as soon as you feel it starting, you know that it’s with you for the day. However, you can rapidly sooth a headache using essential oils. But you need to know how to use them and in what instances, as they cannot simply be used interchangeably. This is why we have compiled this guide on how to treat each type of headache with the right essential oil. 

Be sure to do a skin test in advance, before using any essential oil, to ensure that you are not allergic. Avoid essential oils if you are pregnant and seek medical advice before using them with children under the age of 7.

1) Roman chamomile for a digestion related headache.

Our diets can sometimes lead to headaches, and you can often get a headache after eating cured meats, fermented cheese, coffee or even chocolate. Roman chamomile is a natural analgesic that could cure your headache.

You simply need to add two drops to a sugar cube and allow it to slowly melt in your mouth.

2) Lavender for stress related headaches

Stress and tension can lead to pain at the back of the head. This soothing and relaxing essential oil frees up nervous tension and is therefore a miracle cure for stress related headaches, when massaged in.

Mix 2 mls of sunflower oil, 2 drops of lavender essential oil, 2 drops of peppermint essential oil (which is refreshing) and 2 drops of tarragon essential oil (which is relaxing). Apply 3 drops of this mixture to the back of the neck. Put your hand on the back of your neck and apply pressure with your fingers before releasing. Continue as such for 2 minutes and then move on to your shoulders and upper back with 3 more drops of the mixture. With your index finger, middle finger and ring finger, massage the area in circular movements for 4 minutes, gradually increasing the pressure.

3) Peppermint for migraines

Peppermint is very refreshing and it activates your cold sensors to stop pain. It’s menthol content prevents pain from getting worse if you act quickly.

Apply 1 drop of pure peppermint essential oil to your temples and massage it in using the tips of your fingers, in gentle circular movements. Continue until the oil has fully penetrated the skin. You can repeat this 2 or 3 times a day to prevent the migraine from coming back.

4) Saro for fatigue related headaches

Fatigue is never pleasant, but if you have a pain in the top of your head as well, it’s even worse. Fortunately, saro is analgesic and energy boosting.

Put 1 or 2 drops on the inside of your wrists and massage the area for 1 minute.

5) Eucalyptus globulus for sinusitis headaches

When you have sinusitis, you experience pain in your forehead, your temples, under your eyes, in your face, you have a blocked nose and you find it hard to breathe. To ease all of these symptoms, there is nothing like eucalyptus globulus essential oil, which is anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and decongestant.

Make a mixture containing 5 mls of sweet almond oil, 2 drops of eucalyptus globulus essential oil, 2 drops of peppermint essential oil and 2 drops of pine essential oil, and put it in a flask. Put one drop of this mixture into each nostril 2 or 3 times a day, and inhale deeply.

And in terms of prevention?

For regular headaches or if you know you are likely to get a headache (for example, if you plan to have a large meal, if you have a stressful or tiring day ahead), try using bergamot essential oil, which is relaxing, soothing and facilitates digestion. Take 1 drop of bergamot essential oil mixed with a small spoon of honey.
