The immune system is what shields us from infections and illnesses caused by viruses or bad bacteria. When it isn’t working at its max, it can confuse the difference between what is healthy and what is infectious. This prevents it from functioning optimally, and can have negative effects on the body in the long term. Additionally, when the immune system is weakened, we notice the appearance of several symptoms: for example, we feel fatigued, we can have muscle pains, cuts and wounds heal slower and we feel the cold more easily. Here are a few natural techniques for strengthening and boosting your immune system.

1) Don’t take too much sun

Sun exposure in small doses is beneficial, in order to fill up on vitamin D. However, overexposure leads to premature skin ageing, can lead to cancer and weaken the immune system.

2) Include healthy nutrients in your diet

  • Vitamin A (present in beef, fish, dairy products, fruit, vegetables, etc.) has beneficial effects on the teeth, the skin and on soft and bony tissue, but it also helps reinforce the immune system.
  • Vitamin C (present in kiwis, mangoes, papayas, grapefruit, blackberries, etc.) is important for tissue regeneration. It helps keep the bones, ligaments, tendons, blood vessels and overall the whole body in good health, thanks to its ability to promote wound healing, prevent cell ageing and eliminate toxins while fighting against the effects of free radicals.
  • Vitamin E protects the cells from damage caused by free radicals, also helping strengthen the immune system by promoting the formation of red blood cells.
  • Zinc (present in oysters, maroilles cheese, comté cheese, rye bread, braised beef, etc.) reinforces the immune system.
  • Thyme is an excellent natural tonic that can be taken twice a day as a tea.
  • Ginger combats the accumulation of toxins in the organs, cleanses the lymphatic system and heats up the body.
  • Probiotics (present in yoghurts, kimchi, sauerkraut or in capsules found in the pharmacy) are found naturally in your body and strengthen the immune system.

3) Ensure you are getting good quality sleep

Good quality sleep is essential for the mind and body. At night, the body produces cells and prepares itself to take on the next day (which may be stressful, tiring and full of exposure to viruses). One bad night can be enough to make you more susceptible to stress and to have less strength to fight off bacteria or viruses, thus increasing your risk of getting sick.
